Advisor Managed Accounts
We offer a family of discretionally managed portfolios under CIBC Wood Gundy's Advisor Managed Accounts Program (AMA) co-managed by Portfolio Managers, Neil Chappell and Graham Isenegger. A discretionary managed account allows for the day-to-day decisions and adjustments (buys and sells) to be made at the Portfolio Manager level, while maintaining full reporting with the client. The goal of the AMA program is to provide you with an efficiently run portfolio that results in superior risk-adjusted rates of return over the long run. We are happy to report that this has indeed been the case. All the portfolios we manage have outperformed their respective benchmarks. However, we are most proud of the fact that they have done so with measurably lower risk. You can view all our portfolios' performance here.
The discretionary managed (AMA) model allows for a flexible system to properly manage portfolios and reduce risk even with increased volatility in the market and quickly changing conditions. Being able to move quickly and efficiently enables us to make small, incremental changes to the portfolio. We continue to use our experience and fundamental analysis to select appropriate securities for the portfolio, but we also use Equity Action Call (EAC) research which provides an objective, unbiased, unemotional and disciplined investment process to know when to lighten equity exposure and raise cash, or when to ride out the short-term volatility and stick to the game plan. We also have a detailed internal manual we call the "Blue Heron trading bible" that provides a structured framework, rules, and operational guidance to aid our execution and ensure reasonable, consistent and repeatable decisions can be promptly and efficiently executed. The AMA system allows us to use the market volatility to our advantage. Positions can be increased at particularly attractive prices, and profits can be taken on short-term price increases.
